    After months of patient and careful work, our talented team members Lorette and Murray have crafted a beautiful display case to protect a very special piece of art — a hand-built model ship made by Jan.

    Kate was determined to honour Jan’s work and ensure it would be well protected, so she asked the Workshop for help. Last week she joined us for morning tea (with a delicious cake in hand!) to celebrate the completion and handover of the Ship’s Case.

    A true community effort, combining skill, care and connection.

    Wanaka Community Workshop is seeking a hands-on, practical person with knowledge and experience in using woodworking machinery and power tools.

    We need someone for 6 – 8 hours on a Saturday to:

    • Supervise open workshop sessions
    • Oversee the safe use of tools and machinery
    • Carry out regular checks on equipment
    • Run basic tool training sessions for members
    • Open the Tool Library

    If you are skilled with tools, enjoy sharing knowledge, and want to support a thriving community initiative, we’d love to hear from you!

    Consistency is important to us to enable the Workshop to be open to members on a very regular basis.

    This is a paid role for a trial period until the end of the year. If successful and it proves worthwhile to the WCW community, it will continue next year.

    Puteketeke, Making a Difference

    The MenShed team build traps at the Wanaka Community Workshop – lots of traps.

    Every day the traps are doing their work protecting our natural environment across the Upper Clutha. Some are located along the shoreline of Lake Wanaka protecting our iconic Puteketeke – the Australasian Crested Grebe, as they lay eggs and raise their young.

    This week we had proof that the traps are doing the job expected of them.

    A stoat had been spotted near the marina. A stoat just a few meters from the floating nesting box’s. But not for long. Within days the trap line had done its work.

    Thanks to members of Wanaka’s Grebe Team who manage the nesting area, Puteketeke our nations recently elected bird of the century, can go about their business.

    Members of the Wanaka Community Workshop are proud to be supporting their great outcome.

    Furoshiki Fabric Gift Wrapping Workshop – Christmas 2023

    Come along to Fabricate for a Furoshiki fabric gift wrapping workshop, just in time for Christmas! You can wrap anything using just a bit of fabric. Best part is you can use the fabric over and over again. No sellotape or ribbons required..

    All proceeds donated to Wānaka Community Networks/LINK for the community Xmas hampers they make up for those who are finding the end of year a little difficult. 

     Materials provided by the amazing team at @wanakawastebusters, or purchase fabric from Fabricate at $5 per metre and bring your own! 

    We will show you how to wrap all sorts of gifts including wine bottles, odd shaped gifts and larger items like kids bikes! No sewing required! Bring along a friend for some Xmas cheer, a few giggles and discover the incredible space that is Fabricate.

    Cup Library for Meditation Event at the Wānaka Recreation Centre

    To combat single use coffee cups Maria asked us to make up a Cup Library where clean cups (in this case sourced from Wastebusters Wānaka) could be hung up for use at gatherings, the idea is the dirty cups are put back in crates on the floor then cleaned and put back on the board.

    This uses some pallet type wood and we used old aluminum tube from mountaineering tents to make the pegs. The legs can be removed with 4 hand wound bolts so the whole thing can fit in a hatchback with the seats down.

    Update: Maria had this to report “Thank you so much for your efforts building and delivering the mug library To our event at the WRC! It’s been a huge success. Wastebusters delivered the mugs and DISHrupt are washing them each day.”

    In June we had the Adventure Film School, which is adjunct to the Mountain Film Festival in Wānaka, visit our Community Workshop. The students and Ross Mackay, their tutor, were amazing and everyone had a great time.
